Auburn Players Suspended Following Mid-Air Incident En Route to Houston Game

Auburn basketball faced unexpected turbulence both on and off the court this week. Freshman Jahki Howard and senior Ja’Heim Hudson will not play in Saturday’s game against Houston following an incident during the team's flight. According to multiple reports, the altercation forced the plane to make an emergency landing on Friday, leading to both players being left behind.

What Happened Mid-Air?

The incident, described by some sources as “horseplay,” involved Howard and Hudson in an in-flight skirmish shortly after takeoff. While specific details remain unclear, the altercation was severe enough for the pilot to alert air traffic control, citing “a bunch of basketball players fighting.” As a result, the team’s plane returned to the airport, and both players were subsequently removed from the flight.

The rest of the team boarded a second plane later that evening, arriving in Houston without Howard and Hudson. The two players’ absence has been confirmed by Auburn officials, and they will not participate in Saturday’s matchup against the University of Houston.

Hudson’s Contribution So Far

Ja’Heim Hudson, a senior transfer from SMU, has shown promise this season. In his previous game against Vermont, he logged 15 minutes on the court, contributing two points, two rebounds, and two assists. Last season at SMU, Hudson averaged 5.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game across 31 appearances. His absence on Saturday could impact Auburn’s bench depth, particularly in a high-stakes game against a top-ranked opponent.

Auburn’s Road Ahead

Currently ranked No. 11 in the nation, Auburn is gearing up for a critical early-season test against No. 4 Houston. Under head coach Bruce Pearl, the Tigers have made three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and are looking to build on that momentum this year. However, the absence of two players—even reserves—could affect team dynamics and depth as they face a formidable Houston squad.

Saturday’s game marks a pivotal challenge for Auburn, as Houston boasts a strong lineup and a reputation for high-intensity play. The Tigers will need to rely heavily on their starting roster and remaining bench to pull off an upset and prove their resilience after an eventful journey.
