Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested Thursday night in Tennessee following a traffic incident, facing four charges, as confirmed by the Franklin Police Department to ESPN.
According to police reports, Cutler, 41, allegedly rear-ended another driver and attempted to flee the scene. He also reportedly offered the other driver $2,000 to avoid contacting the authorities.
Cutler is facing charges for driving under the influence, possession of a handgun while under the influence, failure to exercise due care to prevent a collision, and violation of implied consent laws. Officers responding to the scene observed that Cutler had "bloodshot eyes" and detected a strong odor of alcohol. The arresting officer noted that he was "staggering, swaying, and walking heavily" at the time.
In a statement, the Franklin Police Department revealed that officers were called to investigate a minor crash in downtown Franklin around 5 p.m. on Thursday, where Cutler had rear-ended another vehicle. "During their interaction, officers noticed a strong smell of alcohol, and Cutler’s speech was slurred," the report said.
Cutler refused to undergo field sobriety tests and was transported to a hospital, where blood was drawn under a warrant. A search of his vehicle uncovered two firearms, including a loaded pistol.
He was arrested and booked into the Williamson County Jail just before 7 p.m. on a $5,000 bond. Cutler was released later that evening at 9:59 p.m.
Cutler, a first-round draft pick for the Denver Broncos in 2006, played for the team until 2008 before being traded to the Chicago Bears, where he played until 2016, becoming the franchise's all-time leading passer with 23,443 yards and 154 touchdowns. He played his final NFL season with the Miami Dolphins in 2017.
